Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel was born 2 March 1989. Emmanuel started her acting career in the theatre in the late 1990s. In the years following, she was offered roles in various West End productions including The Lion King. She was born in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England, on March 2nd 1989. Her mother is Dominican. Her dad is half-Saint Lucian, half English. She has an older sister. Emmanuel remembered that her mother first took notice of her interest and determination to be an actress during her time at the independent St Hilda's School, which was closed in 2014, and then the Westcliff High School for Girls grammar school. In an interview with the New York Daily News, she commented "When I was 3years old, I always caused drama, and my mum decided maybe I should channel that energy in a more professional manner, so she started me on singing, dancing and acting classes".At the age of 10 she portrayed the role of Young Nala in the West End production of the musical The Lion King. Later that year, she was cast as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter on HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones. She admitted to Jimmy Kimmel that she heard about her winning the role while working as a shop attendant at a clothes shop. Emmanuel was appointed a regular cast member in 2015 following her win the role. Missandei, the only notable female persona on the show was a black woman. The scene where she was chained to death was not well-liked by fans. The scene was also considered an example of fodging and was evoked with images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to her death was overwhelming because she was not alone. Many felt unwelcome or othered had felt connected to her or were influenced by them, especially women of color. In the event of her death - and in the way that she died, it was a traumatic experience for those who thought, "Oh, no! They're going after the only woman of color.
